Crimes Against the Elderly and Disabled

8 hrs

This course is designed to increase understanding of the laws, as they've been written in some states, to protect the elderly and disabled adult populations. At the completion of instruction, participants should be able to identify elder issues that currently exist within communities, recognize specific crimes, and the impact of such crimes on elderly and disabled populations. The participants should be familiar with criminal justice and social-service resources available to enhance law enforcement’s response to crimes against the elderly and disabled.

Specific emphasis is placed on ensuring each participant understands common perceptions associated with the aging process and develop the ability to recognize accurate aging process issues. Crimes associated with an aging population, inclusive of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, issues relating to the treatment of the victim, and recognition and investigation of crimes against the elderly and disabled will be covered.
