Injury and Death Investigation

This seminar is designed to give the patrol officer and investigator with limited experience in injury and death investigations, a general insight into investigative and the legal and evidentiary issues related to conducting an effective initial or follow-up inquiry into a case involving death.

Issues related to securing the scene, keeping if sufficiently large enough to capture all relevant evidence and witnesses, determining the manner of death, determining the types of wounds and their causation, and factors related to the cause of death, etc. will be covered.

Components

  • Medico-legal aspects evidence from wounds.

  • Physical evidence and laboratory analysis.

  • Crime specific investigations.

Additionally, elective topics may include some or all of the following:

  • Toxicology.

  • The police/prosecutor role in case preparation.

  • Media relations in major crime cases.

  • Major case coordination.

  • Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
